Can I Get My Ears Pierced Yet, Mum?
Have you been hearing this asked more and more frequently lately?
As a mum of a nearly 10-year-old girl, I get asked this on the regular. This summer, I have decided I am ready to say yes.
There is no legal age limit to get your ears pierced, and when is too young is an issue that crops up time and time again, dividing parents across the nation.
Apparently, the average age girls get their ears pierced is seven, so we are slightly behind the times. But I wanted to wait until I thought my daughter could look after her piercings, enjoy them, and understand the permanence of changing her body. She is also an active girl who loves playing outside and climbing trees, so I was worried about them being knocked or caught.
Arguments for getting ears pierced at a younger age include that they are too young to be nervous about the pain and also are less likely to fiddle with them whilst they heal.
Now that we have made the decision to go ahead, I have done lots of research on how to make the process as easy as possible and hopefully minimize the pain or at least distract from it!
Preparing for the Piercing
I think the most important thing is if your child is old enough, talk them through the process, make them aware of what is going to happen, and how it might feel. If you can stay calm and reassure them throughout, it will definitely help a lot.
There are also lots of pain-numbing creams or sprays available, but it may be best you speak to your piercer before applying anything.
Choosing the Right Place
Make sure you research where you are going to get the piercing done. Ask for recommendations, pick a professional piercer, and it is always best to go to a certified piercing specialist. My choice is to always have piercings carried out with a needle as opposed to a gun. Ask them to explain their hygiene protocols and it sounds obvious, but make sure everything is clean and presentable in their piercing shop or studio.
The Big Day
When the big day arrives, try to make it as fun and stress-free as possible. Perhaps plan a little outing around the piercing to make it a special occasion. Stay positive and upbeat to help your child feel comfortable and excited.
Aftercare
Aftercare is crucial to avoid infections and ensure the piercings heal properly. Make sure your child knows how to clean their new piercings and understand why it’s important not to touch them with dirty hands or twist them unnecessarily.
Conclusion
If you are taking the exciting step of getting new piercings this season, GOOD LUCK! It's a memorable experience and can be a great bonding moment for you and your child. If you aren't ready yet remember it is a decision to make with your child and not something to rush into.
